Going Green ~

28th March 2009 was the remark of our responsibility to save our tiny part of the world by switching off lights in our homes for an hour. Well, I did my part for half an hour (not going to lie) but at least I did something. I had to switch it on back as my mum was shouting (ha-ha) fearing of thieves nowadays (can’t really blame her it’s getting worse near my residence area). But what I see is that most the people do not really care about it and it’s sad. You do not have to do something big or drastic but just start small and simple things by switching off the lights. Or you can do big just as what like what Leonardo D’caprio (etc buying Hybrid cars and doing documentary) did if you have all the ka-ching and fame. I really admire him for that. I used to not bother or care about it but the environmental changes and all the weird sickness had really wake me up from a deep hell.

Think how much we contribute to global warming without realizing (or by ignoring it). Ok let’s do some simple test:
  • How often do you clean your fan?
  • How many times have you done gardening?
  • Have you ever planted a tree in a year?
  • How many plastic do you use a day?
  • How many times have you recycled your garbage?
  • How long does you a/c will be on?

Honestly, it’s not like I’m doing all these above things. But I did most of it. I clean my fans often and I do not on a/c. Fans blade that covered in dirt and dust require more power to spin. I rarely do gardening but I do plant tree if I have more space and will go up against if someone wants to cut down a tree. You can see greedy contractors eating up the entire hill to build houses. I think it would good if they replant each and every tree that they have chopped down.
What I am really trying to convey here is that, we can start from doing small and simple things in saving our world. It still counts. People do not seem to understand this. Like the other day, when I was explaining to “some people” on energy saving and turning off the light. They did not even bother about it. Why can’t people understand that by doing this is actually not for others sake but it is for themselves? Anyway we still have some time left to make a difference. I will do my part and I hope other will to. Below is some interesting tactics that I do and maybe you can try it as well.

Do you know that the sprays that we used to clean windows contain chemicals which are washed down to drain and pollute our water? Well there is a way you can undo this by using the old newspapers to wipe the mirror and windows. Newspaper ink absorbs dirt and shines glass without harming the environment.

I do not know if you have realized toilet-cleaners use this brown color multi-purpose cleaner to wash bathrooms. As for me, I have seen cleaners from my university hostel used to use this to clean. The multi-purpose cleaner is not a chemical product instead it is all-natural, environment-friendly, non-toxic and best of it is made from kitchen scrap. I actually discovered this from an article published in The Star and way to go, it is good.
Well, it is called Garbage Enzyme and guess what you can do it on your own. Here are the tips (all thanks to the article):-
  • Use ratio of 1:3:10 of sugar, vegetable/fruits dregs (residue) and water.
  • For example: -
    1 kg of sugar,
3 kg of vegetable/fruits dregs and
    10 liters water.
  • For sugar component, use jaggery (gula merah) or molasses.
  • For fresh-smelling enzymes add oranges or lemon peels or pandan leaves.
  • Fruits wastes are better than vegetables.
  • Use an air-tight plastic container to allow for expansion. Do not use glass or metal containers.
  • Place the container in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Open the container daily in the first month to release gasses.
  • If you have not gathered enough kitchen waste, you may fill the container gradually.
  • The 3 month fermentation process starts with the last batch of kitchen waste. Push the floating garbage downward every once in awhile.
  • The enzyme liquid should be in dark brown color. If it is blackish, add the same amount of sugar to start the fermentation process again.
  • Ignore any white, black or brown layer that forms on the surface of the mixture. This is just yeast. If the container is not airtight, maggot and flies may appear. (not nice)
  • After 3 months, filter the fermented liquid through an old t-shirts or sieve. Use the residues in your new batch of enzymes or as fertilizer.
  • Here the best part, the enzyme never expire and must be diluted with water before using it. What a cheap and effective way!
This garbage enzyme sure does good things as it can help your plant to bloom, remove all the dirt from floor, kitchen toilets and the enzyme can help you to clean drainage pipes which will reduce smelliness ,flies and dirty b**** cockroaches. (Hate ‘em a lot esp. the flying ones.) And best of all, we are not contributing chemical to our rivers. See you can contribute something at the same time benefits you.

IT’S TIME TO ACT. DO SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF AND FOR OUR COMING GENERATIONS.
